Suncatcher
Handcrafted Decorative Hanging Piece | Mixed Media Craftsmanship | 2021
About the Project
This suncatcher is a decorative hanging piece that I created for the final project of a college course entitled Materials. The project brief was completely open ended, less the one requirement to select a focus material that’s impact on the final piece could not be replicated by another material. My suncatcher is created with a mix of wood, metal and glass, with glass being my chosen focus material to achieve the desired prism effect. As a lover of nature and someone who enjoys sitting in whatever area of my house is graced by the most sunlight at any given moment, a suncatcher is an item I have always desired, so I was very excited to create one myself.
The suncatcher is made up of a wooden hanging apparatus, finished with linseed oil, and the prisms are hung from zinc screw eyes, copper jump rings, and gold-toned chain. The warm toned wood and metals were intentionally selected in order to create the desired feeling of warmth and sunny aesthetic I intended for the final piece. I employed a variety of wood and metalworking techniques throughout the creation of this piece. The final piece resides in the sunniest corner of my apartment, casting a beautiful array of rainbows over my living room every afternoon.

Sketches
Initial project brainstorming including ideas of what materials to use and what all would be included in each hanging strand.
After my initial brainstorming, I honed in on the idea to have two pieces of wood, perpendicularly-set, each holding 10-15 strands of prisms hung at incremental lengths.
The crafting process began with the wooden hanging apparatus. I planned out my joinery method and made notes of my planned measurements to follow in the woodshop.
After creating the hanging apparatus, I began work on the prism strands. I determined at what increments I would hang the strands along the wooden beams, and how many prism beads I would attach to each strand.
I continued in the strand creation process by sketching out a design of my planned layout for the prism strands.
Crafting Process
After cutting, sanding, and gluing my wood pieces together, I finished the hanging apparatus with a couple coats of linseed oil.
The next step of the process was installing screw eyes to hold each of the prism strands.
I then began work on the prism strands. I cut some gold toned chain in 3/4" increments to create the incremental hanging effect I was going for.
I also used some of the gold chain as well as some jump rings and split rings to create the hanging apparatus that would suspend the finished piece from the ceiling.
I used copper jump rings to connect the prisms to the chains, and the chains to the screw eyes once each prism strand was fully assembled.
